A Trip to the Moon

20 Feb

A Trip to the Moon, created in 1902, is the first Science Fiction film, directed by Georges Méliès. A group of astronomers meet, and ultimately decide to make a trip to the moon. The group makes a giant cannon and shoots the ship out, which looks like a bullet. They arrive safely at the moon, and go to sleep. Eventually they meet moon inhabitants, which they fend off easily, and proceed to return to earth. The most memorable thing about the film was the special effects. Today they seem silly, with things like the ship hitting the man in the moon in the eye. Although primitive, I find it interesting how Méliès envisioned an event that would actually occur in a drastically different fashion.
